It is with profound sorrow, We the Owners, Management and Staff at Gatlin Mortuary Inc stand along side the Hargett family as we announce the earthly transition of Dr. David Hargett, age 68, who passed into eternal rest on Friday August 28, at South Georgia Medical Center.
Dr. David Hargett was the fourth child born to Unessee Hargett, Sr., and Ada Lee Smith Hargett, in South Lowndes County, Georgia. He joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church at a young age. He attended P.G. Williams Elementary School and Westside High School, graduating with the highest honor of valedictorian, in 1969. He then attended Clark College (now ClarkAtlanta University) in Atlanta, GA, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After graduation from Clark, he continued his education at Emory University in Atlanta, where he became board certified in Internal Medicine. He opened a private medical practice in Valdosta, GA, in 1982, and after ten years, pursued the medical profession in other areas and locations, before subsequent retirement. While David was a dedicated professional, he will be most remembered by his commitment and love of his family and friends. He touched countless lives, selflessly taking the time to listen and support others in times of need. He had deep empathy for others and small-town sensibilities from his childhood. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, spending time with family and friends, and watching sports. He especially enjoyed spending time with the love of his life, his only child, Davieon Kristen, and his only grandchild, Davis. Dr. Hargett expired at South Georgia Medical Center, on Friday, August 28, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Evelyn H. MurrayBruce; and brother, Robert. In addition to his daughter, Davieon, and granddaughter, Davis of Atlanta, Dr. Hargett is survived by five brothers, Jesse (Mary), Unessee Jr. (Thelma), Dr. Lewis (Dr. AvaDawn), Willie (Annette), and Grant (Terri); three sisters, Leila, DeLois, and Grace; sister-in-law, Ethelrene; brother-in-law, Ben; aunt, Katrina Smith-Hargrett; stepson, Jibade Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. David’s life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and he is loved beyond words. He will be missed beyond measure!
We solicit your prayers for the Hargett family.
